So you have decided to renovate? Do you know what the first step should be?
Before you contact the Council, an architect, and the bank, you should actually get in touch with your builder. That might sound a bit backwards as surely the builder would need resource consent, plans to work to and funds to work with right?
Actually, it is far more important to engage your builder at the very beginning of the project as their knowledge and expertise can save you a lot of time, stress and heartache in the long run. You should also make a point of selecting the right builder, don’t simply type ‘local builder’ into Google and hope for the best. That is a recipe for disaster. Instead, you should select a builder that specialises in renovations and who is significantly well connected to reliable tradespeople and suppliers.
Choosing a company like Jack for your next renovation project means you have all of these bases covered, and more.
Let’s look into the process of selecting the right builder for your renovation.
Expert Knowledge And Expertise
The first step to finding your builder is to check that they are a Licensed Building Practitioner. That means they have been tested against many standards to ensure they provide work that is safe and of the highest quality. This mark of quality shows that you can trust what your builder is going to produce.
Once you know they are a Licensed Building Practitioner, it is time to check their expertise and experience. Here at Jack, we have a wealth of experience. Our co-owners Mark and Dean have more than 40 years of industry experience between them, and that is not even counting the experience of the rest of our amazing team!
Mark has spent a career perfecting his skills in sales, marketing, and business management within the construction industry. He has worked in construction supply and fit-out organisations, electrical wholesale, kitchen creation, and commercial fit-out businesses both in the UK and New Zealand. He is extremely passionate about property, renovation and the customer experience.
Dean lives by the mantra ‘Constant Improvement’. He has applied that to his own career in cabinet making, and his desire to build lasting relationships with both trades and clients. His extensive corporate kitchen background has given him a real understanding of what it means to consistently achieve the best results. Dean knows everything about keeping the business running smoothly from brand systems to Health and Safety.
Renovations Experts
There is no point selecting a builder that specialises in deck building if you need your bathroom renovated. All builders are not the same, most have honed their skills in certain areas, so you want to select a builder that is an expert in renovations.
Here at Jack, we have over 1000 renovations under our belt and counting. We have successfully completed everything from kitchen installations to breathing new life into old bathrooms, to complete indoor makeovers, and we even specialise in extensions too. Whatever your project is, we can handle it.
Key Relationships
While a builder is a vital component of your renovations project, they cannot work alone. That is why you need to select someone who has excellent working relationships with other tradespeople and suppliers, but also with the key designing roles. In particular, the architect, interior designer, and kitchen designers to ensure a cohesive and beautiful end result.
Fortunately, the team at Jack understand the importance of such an approach. That is why we have a full team of experts at our disposal. Not only do we have the builders and the tradespeople, but we also have a highly skilled design team. Together they work to provide stunning, practical and effective results for all of our clients.
One Of Our Recent Successes
We recently made one family extremely happy with the renovation project we completed on their beautiful home in Remuera.
What we did: Complete project management and renovation of 4 bathrooms at a total cost of $109,000.
Why we did it: The family had been in the process of renovating their entire home and the bathrooms were the only rooms that remained untouched. In comparison to the rest of the house, they were tired and outdated.
What they wanted: Because the clients own a large electrical contracting company, they had excellent trade knowledge and knew exactly what they wanted. This meant they could give us a very clear brief to follow. We had a very specific quality to deliver and an overall look to achieve.
They wanted one company to handle everything for them so they weren’t constantly running between different trades, suppliers, designers and contractors. We gave them a fully managed approach so that they had one central point of contact and we were the ones running between the different trades.
Finally, they wanted to stay living in the house while the renovations took place. That meant only renovating a couple of bathrooms at a time. They did have teenage daughters at home after all!
What we achieved: The transformation was unbelievable. Not only were the bathrooms in keeping with the rest of the renovations in the home, but they were modern, spacious, functional and state of the art. The best part was that we were able to maximise every inch of space to suit the way that the family used the home. For example, we increased the floor area and storage in some places and were able to include a shower where there was not one before due to the gabled ceilings.
The family were ecstatic with their stunning bathroom renovations and were relieved that the process was as stress-free as a renovation can be!
