Brrr, it is getting chilly! Time to turn the heater on, right?
It is around this time of year that people realise that a pair of thermal socks and a jumper may not cut it any more!
But with so many options for heating on the market, how do you know which is the best?
Well, if you are looking for efficient and cost effective heating, then you can’t beat a heat pump.
For a start, the machine is incredibly effective and protects your asset, it reduces the risk of a fire and provides a cost benefit for any tenants, plus it also complies with the law and adds value to your home or rental property.
Let’s look into these points in a little more detail…
Effective Heating
As we all know, a warm home means happier, healthier family members during winter. But you don’t want to have to spend the earth to keep your house warm. That is not friendly to your bank account or to the environment. Which is why you want to choose an efficient and effective heating source. Heat pumps are the most efficient way to heat your home with electricity.
Heat pumps work by drawing in air from the outside, heating it and pushing the warm air out into the room. They are controlled by a thermostat so you can keep your home at the desired temperature all day or night.
Protects Your Asset
Your house (or rental properties) will probably be some of your biggest assets. You want to make sure they are well protected. New Zealand homes are notorious for being damp, but heat pumps can help to prevent that.
When it comes to heating a home, insulation is your first priority for keeping the warmth in and the cold out! But, once you have that covered off, you want to be able to heat the home to a comfortable temperature. It is advised that homes are kept between at least 18° to 21°C during winter.
Not only does it keep your family warm and snug, but it also keeps dampness away. Damp and mould can be very damaging to a property, so you want to avoid them at all costs. Running a heat pump keeps the home at a consistently warm temperature and helps to prevent dampness.
Reduces The Risk Of Fire
Many heating sources come with an increased fire risk. A fireplace is quite literally a fire burning within your home. Without proper use or maintenance, they can be dangerous. Then you have gas heating options which can release flammable toxins into the air, and also have an increased fire risk if they are not used correctly.
Using a heat pump as your main heating source dramatically reduces the risk of fire in your home. Operating efficiently on electricity, their danger levels are very low. This means more protection for your home and those that live within it.
Cost Benefits For You Or Tenants
Heat pumps only cost between 5 and 10 cents per kilowatt to run, making them a cost-effective choice. They also distribute the heat evenly throughout the room, meaning you can operate them at a lower temperature than other heating sources.
Some heating options only “spot heat”, meaning you need to be virtually on top of them to feel any benefit – such as fan heaters or oil fin heaters. These spot heaters are a costly way to heat a large area, whereas a heat pump is not.
Complies With The Law
Any good landlord will want their tenants to be comfortable in their property. And as of 1st July 2019, it is law that they must be. All landlords must be able to guarantee that their properties are fully insulated, or have a heating source that keeps the home warm. Having a properly insulated home and a heat pump ticks both of these boxes.
Adds Value To Your Property
A heat pump will not add a set financial amount to the value of your house, but it does increase its perceived value. In fact, not having a heat pump definitely detracts from the value. Think of it this way, if you were a tenant looking for a home, would you rather pay a premium rent price for a nice warm house or the same rent for a cold one?
