In support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ, Anzac Autos are entering the ‘24 Hours of Lemons’ car race.
The ‘24 Hours of Lemons’ is all about heap motor racing, fun and supporting a great cause. The great thing about it is that all donations and a sizeable portion of the profits made from running the event will go directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
So, what is a ‘lemon’?
In the auto trade, there is a technical term we use for a vehicle that either challenges us with constant problems, is poorly designed or constructed, or has a reputation for being unreliable. Some of you will have heard many jokes that refer to the Russian built Lada, or the Czech created Skoda with a ‘heated hand warmer in the rear window, great for when you need to push the car on a cold winter’s day.’
Both of these vehicles are what some might refer to as a ‘lemon’.
The rules for the race are pretty simple… you are not allowed to spend more than $999 to purchase the vehicle. Once you have the vehicle, you can spend as much as you need to make it safe, but are not encouraged to go crazy on making it go really fast.
If you choose to ignore the rules and recommendations then there are consequences! You could receive penalties like deducting laps, on the spot fines (That are donated straight through the Cancer Foundation), or silly things like running around your car 20 times. The whole point of the event is to have fun and to finish.
Our entry is a fine specimen. It is a 2000 Subaru Legacy that we paid a whopping $750 for. Of course, it was in pretty rough condition and the motor didn’t run. But the team have put a lot of hours of their own time into getting it up and running. They have done an amazing job!
The first race is September 14-15 with up to 24 hours of racing time over the weekend.
We hope it will be a great event that raises plenty of funds for a worth cause. Stay tuned for how we went after the race has finished!
