Taking care of your tyres is essential to ensure your safety on the road and maximise their lifespan. Proper maintenance and regular checks can help you get the most out of your tyres and save money in the long run.

Regularly Check Tyre Pressure

Maintaining the correct tyre pressure is crucial for safety and longevity. Use a reliable pressure gauge to check the pressure when the tyres are cold, and adjust it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Underinflated tyres increase fuel consumption, wear out faster, and compromise handling, while overinflated tyres can cause a harsh ride and reduce traction.

Inspect Tread Depth

A healthy tyre should have adequate tread depth for proper grip on the road. Check the tread regularly using a tread depth gauge or the “coin test.” If the tread depth falls below the recommended minimum, it’s time to replace the tyres.

Rotate Tyres Regularly

Uneven wear is common on tyres due to variations in weight distribution and driving conditions. Regularly rotating your tyres, typically every 10,000 km, helps distribute the wear evenly and extends their life.

Maintain Proper Wheel Alignment

Misaligned wheels can lead to uneven tyre wear. Get your wheel alignment checked and adjusted by a professional if you notice uneven wear patterns or your vehicle pulling to one side.

Avoid Aggressive Driving

Frequent hard braking, fast acceleration, and sharp turns put excessive stress on your tyres, leading to premature wear. Drive smoothly and avoid sudden manoeuvres whenever possible.

Check for Signs of Damage

Inspect your tyres regularly for any signs of damage, such as cuts, bulges, or sidewall cracks. If you notice any issues, have them inspected by a professional and replace them if necessary.

Keep an Eye on Tyre Age

Tyres have a limited lifespan, even if they have sufficient tread depth. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tyres every 6-10 years, regardless of wear. Check the manufacturing date on the sidewall to determine the age of your tyres.

By following these tips and maintaining a proactive approach to tyre health, you can ensure that your tyres last longer, provide better performance, and enhance your safety on the road. Remember to consult your vehicle’s manual and seek professional advice when in doubt.
