Washing your car at home can be a very satisfying task. The immediate gratification of stepping back and admiring the results of your toil is well worth the effort.
If you have ever been disappointed by the result or wished for a more blinding shine, you may need to implement a few of the following basic methods.
Not only do the tips in this list ensure a valet-standard finish, but they will also help to preserve the body of your car.
Top Tips
- Pour in the appropriate amount of wash/wax into your bucket first. Add the water by placing the hose at the bottom of the bucket to create a swirling action, ensuring thorough mixing of product and water.
- Do not use household dishwashing detergent as an alternative to car washing liquid.
- Start with the highest surfaces first.
- The cleaning mitt or cloth you use must have the ability to hold the washed-off dirt particles in its fibres to avoid them from having any direct contact with the paintwork.
- Avoid using a sponge, as they can retain dirt particles that ultimately will scratch the paintwork.
- Always work your way downwards and towards the dirtiest panels and trims, changing the water as necessary.
- Keep uncleaned surfaces wet using a hose before washing.
- Allow water to flow over the car’s body when rinsing rather than using a spray; this will help avoid water spots.
- Never wash a vehicle in the heat of the day, in bright sunshine or when the body panels are warm to the touch.
- Park over a grass area to stop contaminated water from entering stormwater drains.
- Do not leave vehicle surfaces wet, as the minerals found in tap water can damage panels and trims, and water spots can appear when the water finally evaporates.
- Use a microfibre cloth to dry.
- Avoid using old bathroom towels for drying as they can retain fine dirt particles that can scratch the paintwork.
- If you apply a polish afterwards, do not rub too hard to remove the leftover film, as this will remove the wax.
- Glass roofs, in particular, can be left with bad water spotting, so ensure good water flow after washing.
- Use a proven automotive glass cleaner to remove any remaining blemishes or water spots on all glass areas.
- Give your tyres a shine.
