Officially, we are still in spring, and the weather can be wild and unpredictable! The combination of sudden downpours – or deluges – and high winds can wreak havoc on your home’s exterior fittings. If left untended, this can lead to costly structural or internal damage.

For peace of mind – and to prevent your home from falling victim to such damage – we suggest you carry out the following regular checks and tasks around your home.

Clear Gutters and Downpipes

When gutters and downpipes clog with leaves and debris, any incoming water will overflow and trickle – or pour – down the side of the house. If left in this state for too long, the home’s walls and footings become waterlogged and compromised and will eventually rot.

If your house is surrounded by trees, it would be prudent to clear the gutters at the beginning of the spring and again after the first heavy rain.

  • Repair damaged gutters and downpipes
  • Fix loose, sagging, or leaking gutters
  • Ensure downpipes carry drainage away from the house

Get into the habit of trimming trees around your home, especially after long hot summers. Trees that have suffered drought or dry conditions become weak when laden with water and are prone to snapping and uprooting.

Check Your Roof, Skylights and Flashing

The roof is the most obvious point of entry for rain. If any part of it is compromised or damaged, your home is wide open to risk; this includes skylights and flashings.

Remember to take all the necessary precautions when working at a height, including:

  • Using a stable ladder
  • Having someone sight you as you work
  • Wearing protective clothing, including eye protection, gloves and secure footwear
  • Minimise trips up and down the ladder. Have all the tools you need on hand and stored securely.

If you are not confident with heights, please always employ the services of a professional tradesperson.

Inspect the House Siding and Paintwork

Check all external walls for signs of damage like cracks or holes and repair where needed.

Check external paintwork to ensure that it is in good condition. Any areas showing signs of ageing will quickly become a problem in wet weather and expose your home to the risks of water damage.

Flood protection

Where flooding was once a rural issue, we now bear witness to more severe weather events resulting in flooding in urban areas.

If you live in a flood-prone area, or your home is left surrounded by pools of trapped water after heavy rain, we suggest you invest in an improved drainage system or a sump pump. Where there is trapped water, there is an increased risk that your home will suffer from water damage.

Secure Outdoor Furniture and Equipment

Spring winds can be strong and easily uplift trampolines and unsecured furniture. Not only can this lead to costly repair work, but it is very unsafe!

Cover and protect outdoor furniture, barbecues, outdoor equipment, and firewood with heavy and secured tarps. Likewise, trampolines. Anchor them to the ground with steel staples, sandbags or similar.

As with most things in life there’s no better protection than being prepared for the worst outcome! A little time spent now could lead to significant savings down the track.
