With fluctuating gas prices in New Zealand, we must find ways to save money at the pump. Here are some tips on how to improve your car’s fuel economy and get the most out of your gas mileage:

Tyre Pressure

Keep your tyres properly inflated to avoid a decreased fuel economy of up to 3%. Check your tyre pressure at least once a month and inflate them to the recommended pressure listed in your owner’s manual or on the tyre label.

Use Cruise Control

Using cruise control on the highway can help maintain a consistent speed and save fuel. Cruise control can improve fuel economy by up to 14%.

Limit Idling for Long Periods

Avoid idling, as it wastes fuel and can decrease fuel economy. If you are stopped for more than 30 seconds, turning your engine off and restarting when it’s time to move is more fuel-efficient.

Avoid Aggressive Driving

Aggressive driving, such as rapid acceleration and sudden braking, can lower fuel economy by up to 33% on the highway and up to 5% in the city. Accelerate gradually and maintain a consistent speed to improve fuel economy.

Use the Correct Oil

Using the recommended motor oil for your car can improve fuel economy by up to 2%. Look for motor oil labelled “energy conserving” to ensure that it contains friction-reducing additives that can improve fuel economy.

Lose the Extra Weight

Remove unnecessary items from your car, as excess weight can decrease fuel economy. Every 100 kilograms of extra weight reduces fuel economy by up to 2%.

Keep a Regular Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance and oil changes can improve fuel economy by up to 4%. Follow your car’s recommended maintenance schedule and keep up with any necessary repairs.

Stick to the Speed Limit

Driving at high speeds can significantly decrease fuel economy. In New Zealand, the maximum speed limit is 100 km/h on open roads and 50 km/h in urban areas. Adhere to these speed limits to improve fuel economy.

Use the Right Gas

Using a higher octane level than recommended by your car’s manufacturer does not provide any benefits and can decrease fuel economy. Use the recommended octane level for your vehicle to improve fuel economy.

Journey Plan

Plan your journey in advance to avoid traffic and unnecessary stops, which can improve fuel economy. Consider using a GPS or map app to find the most efficient route to your destination.
