Anyone who has ever tried to put a child to bed at the end of the day will know that this task can come with various outcomes. Sometimes it’s a seamless process, and others, it is less so!

Children are energetic beings with busy minds. The trick to shutting them down for the day is to ensure the energy tank is spent and their mind is restful and relaxed so that the idea of bed is as attractive to them as it is to the parents trying to get them there!

Today, children are exposed to many external stimuli that can alter their body’s natural ability to begin the shutdown phase. Stressors like a global pandemic, global unrest, or more simple worries like trouble at school or a fight with a friend can make it near impossible for them to reach a state of emotional calm that will allow them to drift off easily.

We can do many things to support our kiddies in establishing a good relationship with sleep and a calming pre-bed routine that promotes an easy transition from the day’s events to a night of restful slumber.

Comfortable and Cosy Bedding

Who doesn’t love a comfy bed with cosy bedding? Making your child’s bed as inviting as possible is phase one, operation bedtime!

Why not take your child shopping and allow them to choose a duvet and sheet set.

A Tidy Bedroom

A tidy and organised bedroom will go a long way in supporting your child to drift off at night. Toys left out will only serve as a distraction, especially for a child who is reluctant to fall asleep or having difficulty switching off from the day.

Why not encourage your child to tidy their room before bed. Better still, why not join in; this can be a great time to subtly check in with your child and be sure they are at ease and not harbouring any worries that might disrupt the bedtime routine.

Blackout Curtains

Blackout curtains are brilliant for blocking out street lights, lights from a neighbouring house, or another part of your home. Without the distraction of imposing light, your child can get on with the business of shutting down their mind and their body more easily.

Nightlights

Sometimes, the intensity of a blacked-out room can be too much for our small people. Nightlights offer a perfect solution! They deliver a soft, warming and comforting light.

Nowadays, you can find many gorgeous designs in just about any theme. Finding one that speaks to your child’s latest obsession or hobby will make the allure of their bed that much more appealing.

A Meditation Station

More and more parents are using guided meditations and mindfulness practices to help their children achieve a calm and restful pre-sleep state.

Whether your child listens to meditation through headphones or a USB speaker, creating a beside meditation station will help to instil the practice as part of their routine. Decorate it with a few of their favourite things, like small trinkets or mementoes that fill them with happy memories. Anything that encourages a sense of calm and feelings of security is perfect.

Soothing Scents

Essential oils are also another excellent sleep remedy. Plugin oil diffusers are safe and affordable, and you can find DIY oil blend recipes online for almost any purpose.

As adults, we know that sweet dreams lead to good health and vitality!

Supporting your child to establish a good relationship with sleep at an early age will benefit them for life.
