Buying a Used Car in NZ: A Practical Checklist

Purchasing a second-hand car can be a great way to save money, but it also comes with risks if you don’t know what to look for. To help you make a smart purchase, we’ve compiled a practical checklist covering everything from paperwork to mechanical checks.

1. Research and Budgeting

  • Determine your budget, including ongoing costs like insurance, registration, and maintenance.
  • Research reliable makes and models that suit your needs.
  • Compare market prices using websites like Trade Me and Turners.

2. Vehicle History and Documentation

  • Check the Warrant of Fitness (WoF): Ensure the WoF is current and not close to expiry.
  • Confirm legal ownership: Use the NZTA’s Motor Vehicle Register to confirm the seller is the legal owner.
  • Check for outstanding finance: Use the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) to ensure no money is owed on the car.
  • Review the service history: A well-maintained car with regular servicing is a safer investment.
  • Check for past accidents: CarJam or MotorWeb reports can provide details on past accidents or damage.

3. Exterior and Interior Inspection

  • Bodywork: Look for rust, dents, or mismatched paint that may indicate repairs.
  • Tyres: Ensure they have at least 1.5mm tread depth (though 3mm+ is safer) and check for uneven wear.
  • Windows and Lights: Ensure no cracks, chips, or fogging, and test all lights.
  • Interior Condition: Check for excessive wear, stains, or odours that may indicate damage.

4. Mechanical and Performance Checks

  • Engine: Look for leaks, excessive smoke, or unusual noises.
  • Battery: Check for corrosion or weak starting power.
  • Brakes: Test for responsiveness and listen for grinding or squeaking.
  • Steering and Suspension: Ensure smooth turning and listen for knocking sounds.
  • Transmission: Test gear shifts for smoothness (automatic and manual).

5. Test Drive

  • Drive at different speeds and road conditions.
  • Check for smooth acceleration, responsive brakes, and steady steering.
  • Listen for unusual noises when driving over bumps or turning.

6. Final Checks Before Buying

  • Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection: A professional mechanic can identify hidden issues.
  • Negotiate the Price: Use any issues as bargaining points.
  • Confirm the Sale in Writing: Ensure you receive a sales agreement or receipt.
  • Update Ownership with NZTA: The new owner must complete the Change of Ownership process online or at an NZTA agent.

Conclusion

Taking the time to thoroughly check a used car before buying can save you from unexpected costs and problems down the road. Follow this checklist to ensure you make an informed and confident purchase. Safe driving!
