Put your hand up if you have written your password on a sticky note and stuck it to your monitor, have a little book in your top draw, or just use the same password for everything.
Having a safe and secure password policy these days is imperative in business and in personal life. “My passwords are safe” you say, “I’ve always used the same one and no one knows my kids’ birthdays, my dog’s name and my favourite things”.
Most of these answers can be found on your social media accounts or can easily be found by password hacking attacks or phishing attacks.
❗ Phishing is the fraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, often for malicious reasons, by disguising as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.
So how do you create a strong password? The key aspects of a strong password are:
- length (the longer the better)
- a mix of letters (upper and lower case)
- numbers, and symbols; with no ties to your personal information.

Tip
Make passwords memorable but hard to guess. For example, “P@55w0rd”, this uses a word but uses all four attributes.
Tip
Use password manager software that stores encrypted passwords online, which will also generate unique, secure passwords for you so you don’t have to use the same password on multiple accounts. I use lastpass.com which allows me to save my passwords online and I only have to remember one password to get in and view and use my other accounts.
