Let’s look at some key features you should seek out and the accompanying questions to ensure you’re not buying an electric lemon.

Range

Question: What is the estimated range on a full charge, and is it sufficient for your daily driving needs?

Charging Infrastructure

Question: What charging options are available in your area? Can you install a home charging station, and if so, what is the cost?

Battery Life and Warranty

Question: What is the warranty on the battery, and what is its expected lifespan? How much will it cost to replace the battery when the time comes?

Charging Time

Question: How long does it take to charge the vehicle using different charging methods (Level 1, Level 2, DC fast charging)?

Charging Compatibility

Question: Is the vehicle compatible with various charging standards (CHAdeMO, CCS, Tesla Superchargers)?

Home Charging Options

Question: Can the EV be charged using a standard household outlet (Level 1), or do you need to install a Level 2 charger at home?

Incentives and Rebates

Question: Are there any government incentives, tax credits, or rebates available for purchasing an EV in your region?

Maintenance and Operating Costs

Question: How do the maintenance and operating costs of the EV compare to a traditional gasoline vehicle?

Question: How does the acceleration and handling compare to traditional vehicles? Is it fun to drive?

Question: What safety features are included, such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and crash-test ratings?

Price and Total Cost of Ownership

Question: What is the upfront cost of the EV, and how does it compare to similar gasoline-powered vehicles? What is the total cost of ownership over several years?

Environmental Impact

Question: How does the manufacturing and disposal of the EV impact the environment? Are the materials used in the batteries sustainable?

Autonomy and Self-Driving Capabilities

Question: Does the vehicle have any autonomous driving features, and if so, how advanced are they?

Size and Space

Question: Does the EV provide enough space for your needs, both in terms of passengers and cargo?

Brand Reputation

Question: What is the reputation of the manufacturer for EVs, and do they have a history of reliability and innovation in the electric vehicle market?

Upgradability and Software Updates

Question: Can the vehicle receive over-the-air software updates to improve performance and add new features?

By considering these features and asking the associated questions, you can make an informed decision when choosing an electric vehicle that best suits your needs and aligns with your environmental goals.
