man looking at city (writing)

As we begin to move towards 2016 and attack our weekly, monthly and yearly targets, it’s an ideal time to examine ‘the way we do things’ and maybe consider trying something new.

We thought we could give you a push in the right direction by discussing a handful of up and coming job boards that might catch your eye.

Whether you’re looking for something cheaper, one that focuses on a specific niche, or you simply like to know what movements are being made in the recruitment world, here’s a quick rundown of some new and interesting movers and shakers in the ‘middle-man’ of the hiring process.

Indeed Logo

1) Indeed

As an international job board that is ranked No 2 in Australia, they have managed to do what no others have done and cracked the Aussie market, and they’re now turning their attention to New Zealand – focusing directly on the market currently dominated by Seek!

The interface is straightforward from an applicant’s point of view, with options to search by either job type or location. Aside from its low-cost appeal (it’s free to list on) Indeed’s success lies in its utter simplicity.

You can also pay extra to sponsor your article, which operates on a cost-per-click payment model. When sponsoring an article you can either choose the ‘simple’ option (set a daily budget) or the advanced option (set a daily budget and a maximum cost-per-click). However if you aren’t too worried about that, this is a good board to utilise in order to increase your reach without increasing your budget.

We’ve been pleasantly surprised with how many candidates applied for our jobs from this board – this may be thanks to Indeed’s work with Google to optimise their ads for search results. Whatever it is, Indeed is a simple, general job board that does what it says on the box – definitely one to watch for 2015.

My Job Space Logo2) My Job Space

Not exactly new to the hiring world, My Job Space has been around for several years now. A Christchurch based company, they are well established in the South Island Job Market, but they’re a national job board and are definitely one to pay attention to this year.

Most recently we’ve heard they are doing a total revamp of their website, and from our conversation with them, it sounds like they’re taking this seriously – a better user interface and some real added value for users, so watch this space! (Sorry, couldn’t help it).

As far as bang for your buck, a single job ad costs $99, or you can get unlimited job listings for $799 a year! The applicants we have found through this job board have all been quality applicants, so whilst it may not have the reach of a board like Trademe, what it lacks in numbers it certainly makes up for in applicant calibre.

Jora Logo

3) Jora

Jora is Jobseeker.co.nz, redesigned. It has a similar interface to Indeed, with options for candidates to search by keywords or location.

Jora is free to list with, but you might want to note that it is also a job aggregator site. This means that you have the option of listing directly on their site, but they also scrape various job listings from other job boards or career sites around the web.

The only difference with the ads for these aggregated jobs is that they take the job seeker directly to that listing, rather than using their own application page. Right now there is no cost or catch, the only thing you have to do is hand over your email address and mobile phone number.

The only downside is that there is no way to have your job ad featured on their site – which means you may have to keep reposting your ad in order to keep it relevant.

Limber Logo

4) Limber

Limber are very much the new kids on the block, as they only just started last year. Wellington based, they have efficiently filled out a niche market, specialising in part time and flexible professional jobs. This site is aiming to connect professional, talented people with the businesses looking for them.

So if you’re looking for a contractor, or someone who can contribute a specific skill set but are unable commit to full time hours, this could be the board for you.

The layout of this site is inviting and easy to use. It costs $160 for a 30 day job listing, with an invitation to contact them if you want to discuss higher volumes of job ads.

One thing we noted was that they get a lot of repeat business from the job seeker side of things, which means you’re reaching an experienced, reliable candidate pool. Definitely one to watch this year!

These job boards fly under the radar compared to their bigger siblings, Trademe Jobs and Seek, but may offer a more targeted and affordable job listing. Food for thought if you are planning on recruiting in 2016.
