Networking is a crucial strategy for building your business. But, it requires that you strike up conversations with strangers; this can be difficult, even for the most confident among us.

Here are five great tips that will help you get the conversation flowing.

Be Approachable

Smile, make eye contact and put yourself out there. Half the people in the room will be as nervous as you are. One connection is all it takes for you to hit your stride and find your confidence.

Offer a Firm Hand

Offering a firm and confident handshake will make people take notice. If you have confidence in yourself, you immediately invite the respect of others. If you have ever been on the receiving end of a limp handshake, you will know how this idea translates.

Lead with a Question

Get the conversation started with an appropriate question. The person will appreciate that you want to hear what they have to say. It also gives you a moment to ease into the conversation and think about your following comment.

Show Interest

Encourage your conversation partner to share their story. You can then comment, giving you the opportunity to pay a genuine and powerful compliment.

Nail Your Elevator Pitch

At some point during the event, you will have the opportunity to tell your story. Be prepared and make sure you know what you are going to say. Rehearse your story before you leave for the event. You want it to flow naturally and deliver it with confidence.
